I have been browsing few forums lately and found quite a number of F’Parents having trouble getting their F’Kids to eat or to love what is being given to them. “Feeding F’Kids every single day has been a dread”;” I am running out of patience feeding them”; “My dog is on hunger strike”….. are few of the comments from many other F’Parents. Are you the unlucky ones here?
Are they in good health? – Is the 1st concern you should be looking into it. If they are good eaters and suddenly loose their appetite on food, then you should pay extra attention on this and find out the reason.
Check their teeth. Bad tooth could be a cause.Any obstruction in between teeth, gum infection etc. Any sudden lost of body mass recently with vomiting or diarrhea, if yes, probably you need to bring F’Kid for vet for check up. It might or could be a health issue that causes F’Kid to loose its urge to eat.
Not burning enough energy?
Well, everything seems normal and no sign of any illnesses, so now what? Sit yourself down and evaluate its daily activity. Most F’Kids eats because they need the energy and if they are not burning off, why eat? Does this make sense?
This may not be unto all dogs but certain breed like Siberian Huskies which has reputation of not eating their food. Well known for its speed, strength and endurance, this breed pull sleds with heavy cargo in the Arctic snow, so they eat just to do that and they eat to store fats to withstand the coldest weather there. Imagine now they are in a home. Cage? Leashed? What? About 9 to 10 hours a day because human works and maybe, I say maybe they will be fortunate enough to get ermmm, 2 to 3 hours to wee and poo and play, and then in, they go back to their cage or leashed? Not burning enough energy and having the same old kibbles everyday, what do you think? This might cause them going for a hunger strike and prolong caging and leashing without proper outdoor activity can also lead to other issue causing unstable F’Kids.
Some busy F’parents even has a running treadmill bought for them and use it everyday. What a genius idea and one would not mind if you have that extra bit of cash in hand, but not all that fortunate and so without much choice make an effort to make sure you walk the dog daily, if not, burn their energy like, throwing a toy and fetch; tug-of war; hide and seek or even run with them on a bike, they will love it. Feed them their meal after 30 mins to 1 hour time.
If you have done working your F’Kids and it still not touching the food, O’Boy, it is most likely your fault. Oooppsss…
Food preference or just that picky habit?
Have you check what is in the kibbles? Kibbles of grain or corn base – as these are not natural food source and no wonder why they are not interested. Kibbles expiring soon and buying that bag, helps save few bucks? Well, trust me although they are canines, they do know what their food preferences. They prefer fresh meat protein, well, dry or wet in this sense.
Then again, some might say “I bought them the premium kibbles, it only interested for few days and then not anymore”. You might want to consider that your F’Kid has pick up some bad habits from you. Have you been giving them treats during the day that are tastier and more interesting than their normal meal?
How about table scraps? You cannot stand looking into their much pitiful eyes begging for your food and in the end, you give in OR your other family members slipping tables scraps while you are unaware can be the reason why they are not interested with their meal. They are now interested with your food instead. So stop giving them treats before their meal and no more table scraps as this can cause other issue like obesity.
Feed F’Kids their meal on time or try to feed them on time MOST OF THE TIME. Get it? They are very much a routine creature. They know when to play, sleeps and eat. If you start practicing setting time for everything with them, they will follow. Treats are meant to motivate them to do something or a token of well done on their certain good action and not giving them treats for the sake of give. To motivate them to eat their kibbles, we got to be creative. Add in some fresh cook vegetables or other meat protein and mix well with kibbles. Every time they finish their meal, praise them and then you reward them with a small treat. Treat of apple yogurt or a cheese stick will do just fine.
So much so, of the above, and do you know that F’Kids do pretty well in a pack and most of time they will eat what you feed them? Reason is F’Kids are feeling a sense of competition in the pack. Is like the F’Kid is saying “If i am not finishing my food, others will steal from me”. Make sense? I am not suggesting to get another F’Kid, hell yeah if you do:> but is only FYI.
Much have been said and hope F’Kids eats well and stay happy. As the saying goes ” Happy dog , Happy mama”…
